When the 2020 Covid pandemic hit, Fatso shifted into high gear to ensure our community was cared for. We immediately started a grocery donation program, picking up excess emergency foods and delivering them to underserved organizations. We started the Safety Sandwich Program, making and delivering over 300 sandwiches a week to outreach organizations. We conducted fundraisers to purchase much needed food and toiletries from our distributors. Throughout the year Fatso donated over $250,000 worth of peanut butter to underserved organizations locally, across Canada, and into the United States.
I established my corporation as a public benefit company in 2020, obtaining the first BCorp Certification for a nut butter company in Canada. We aimed to balance purpose with profit and committed to providing social and environmental benefits to our community at-large.
Internally, we aimed to serve and benefit our employees with above standard employee policies including paid sick and mental health leave and a commitment to diversity and inclusion in our hiring and supplier selection.
Fatso’s robust social media platform was built by a community that was deeply connected to the causes we championed. We believed that when we build a strong community, it truly belongs to everyone. That’s why we regularly gave up our platform to spotlight individuals who represent the diversity in the broad spectrum of health, wellness, fitness, and nutrition. We were fortunate enough to have influencers and activists of every background engage with our audience by sharing their experiences and stories through our social media.
In 2021, I established the annual Peers Micro Grant Program. Peers Victoria is a multi-service grassroots agency that was established by, with, and for sex workers. These small grants of $250 are designed to provide highly accessible, low barrier opportunities to current and former sex workers associated with Peers. We welcomed projects of all kinds including sex positive toy reviews, upcycled taxidermy, new dance shoes, and tech support for new businesses!
As a company, we provided monthly support for a trans refugee-led initiative that provided safe housing and materials to trans refugees in Kenya and Uganda. Run by Victoria-based refugee and activist, this initiative helped to fund safe houses, daily needs, and social activities for trans refugees living in camps in Kenya and Uganda as they tried to find safe-harbour in LGBTQ+ safe countries.
In 2021 we launched our City, Beach, and Waterway Cleanup events. As a team we hosted, sponsored and participated in a city wide clean up. We live in one of the most beautiful cities in the worked, Victoria, BC, and wanted to contribute to its overall health and vibrancy.
